Michael Yon is an author, freelance journalist, and photographer. In WW2 he would have been called a war correspondent. He's reported from Iraq and is currently in Afghanistan. Before becoming a journalist, he was a member of U.S. Army special forces.
Yon's blog is fascinating on two levels. First, he provides a great deal of insight into what is happening on the ground in Afghanistan. Second, he is a truly gifted photographer. He has had some amazing photos of the people and countryside of Afghanistan.
His latest entry is about cell phone networks in third world countries like Afghanistan. Even in a backward, quasi-medieval place like Afghanistan, people are globally connected.
